ECODESIGN PACKAGING FRAGRANCES

2020 - 2021

Research project with Louise Rué Design

for the Boutures exhibition at the Luxe Pack special edition sustainable packaging show - in September 21.

Caps are an integral part of a perfume's design and visual identity. Their main function is to prevent the perfume from being pumped during transport, and to contribute to the user's sensory and aesthetic experience. That said, perfume caps are still packaging, and must comply with regulations, notably by being recyclable at the end of their life.

However, most perfume closures are made from complex, often non-separable materials, such as polypropylene (PP), zamac, surlyn or metallized ABS. Caps are designed to resist humidity, perfume, etc. over time. These mixtures of materials pose problems in terms of recyclability, while the high weight of caps and bottles, perceived as a quality criterion, also has an impact on the carbon footprint of such packaging.

With this in mind, we decided to rethink the design of perfume closures based on the principles of eco-design:

  • Promote recyclability by designing closures in single-component or easily separable materials.
  • Reduce weight without compromising aesthetics or the perception of luxury.
  • Use less impactful, recycled, biosourced or biodegradable materials.
  • Give corks a second life, by integrating reuse or transformation possibilities.

A bulky but lightweight, single-material hood.

Reusable as a flower-stand.

Prototyping 3D printing PLA + shell powder (industrially compostable)

"Totem

A glueless mix of materials, screwed together.

Recycled plastics from cosmetics packaging, a unique material effect.

Reusable fashion accessory, pendant...

"Bijou

Work on a cork form, set with a second biodegradable material.

The concept was repeated on the Petite Madeleine project, using shell biocomposte.

Prototyping machined agglomerated cork and biopolymer plate and egg and nut shell chips.

Reusable as a mini jewelry hook
