Following on from our research into alternatives to floral moss, which began with the creation of mycelium spheres, we have developed an innovative funeral container designed for large-scale mourning floral arrangements.
Today, the most common method for creating these arrangements, especially casket tops, is to use blocks of synthetic floral foam, which are practical but polluting. And the florist's use of reusable containers is unsuitable for this purpose.
It was with this desire to offer a more environmentally-friendly solution that we met Tiphaine, founder of Les Bottes d'Anémone, a committed florist in Vannes. Seeking ecological alternatives to design a sustainable funeral range, she teamed up with Boutures to co-develop mycelium containers suitable for mourning arrangements.
We developed our first cross-shaped model, which is lightweight and easy to handle for florists and funeral directors, and can retain water for over a week, keeping flowers fresh.
The all-natural support made of straw and mycelium is naturally compostable with the flowers when they are wilted.
We are currently continuing to develop these containers in different shapes and sizes, and are studying the addition of biodegradable elements to wedge the flowers in place, to make the job of arranging them easier for florists.
This project marks a new stage in our commitment to offering sustainable, biodegradable solutions that are compatible with florists' traditional practices, in order to reconcile memory and respect for the living world.
